- Cracks and Checks on wood: Similar to many substances, wood undergoes expansion when exposed to moisture and contracts as it dries. The formation of checks results from uneven drying of the wood, and this phenomenon is both widespread and inevitable. The natural tendency of wood to split during the drying process is quite common. It's important to note that a wood check is not a structural issue. In fact, many people appreciate that the checking of wood posts enhances the inherent beauty of the timber. Checking is not only normal but also desired, as it serves as an indicator that the wood has reached a state of dryness.
