Pyramid Lake, a stunning terminal desert lake and the largest remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, lies in Washoe, Lyon, and Storey Counties, Nevada. Covering a vast 112,000 acres with a 71-mile perimeter and reaching a remarkable depth of 350 feet, its striking blue and gray hues and unusual rock formations, including the iconic Stone Mother, create a mesmerizing landscape. This significant lake is the only habitat in the world for the ancient Cui-ui fish and is renowned for its trophy-sized Lahontan cutthroat trout, drawing anglers from around the globe. While the north, east, and south shores are closed to shore fishing, the west side offers 23 miles of accessible shoreline.
Beyond its world-class fishery, Pyramid Lake offers a variety of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on its expansive waters, as well as hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding desert terrain. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Museum and Visitors Center provides valuable insights into the tribe's rich culture, history, and the natural history of the lake. Birdwatching is also a popular activity, with diverse avian species inhabiting the area. Camping is permitted in designated areas along the western shore, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the unique beauty and tranquility of this Nevada gem.
