It is a large piece: 48 inches long, 22 inches wide and 5 inches high, sized to be the clear focal point of a long bathroom vanity. Every sink carries its own natural veining and colour, so no two pieces are identical, and the clean rectangular lines suit transitional and modern bathrooms alike.

Honed and filled, softly edged

The finish is honed and filled. Honing buffs away the outer layer of the stone to leave a fresh, dull, almost matte surface with a rustic but refined look. Filling closes the small natural holes that travertine is known for, so dirt has fewer places to settle, and the smoother surface resists everyday marks better than a rough, open texture. The edges are curved and the construction is smooth, which removes hard-to-clean corners and helps the piece stand up to daily use. The honed face is forgiving: everyday wear shows less on a matte surface than on a glossy one. As natural stone, the colour and pattern change from sink to sink, and that variation is part of what makes each one handmade.

Built for a long vanity

At 48 by 22 inches, this basin needs a vanity to match, and on one it becomes the centerpiece of the room. It sits comfortably in a minimalist modern bathroom and just as well in a warm, organic space with wood, linen and plaster. In a primary bathroom the long basin gives room for two people at the sink or for bigger washing jobs, and it can anchor a spa-like powder room with a large vanity wall. It fits standard bathroom vanity heights, and the 5 inch height keeps the rim low and the profile slim. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings and lets water drain away cleanly.

A strong, level vanity top

This basin is installed above the counter. A 48 inch piece of solid travertine is heavy, so the vanity top must be flat, level and built to carry it. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the sink is set in silicone to hold it and seal the joint. Because the rim sits above the counter, plan a faucet that reaches over it: a tall deck-mounted faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Decide on the faucet and its position before the counter is cut, and given the size and weight of the stone, use an experienced installer.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, and acidic products can etch the honed surface. Periodic resealing keeps the surface protected, and how often depends on how much the sink is used.
