Merritt Reservoir, nestled in the scenic Sandhills of Cherry County, Nebraska, offers a remarkable 2,906 acres of water and approximately 44 miles of shoreline. This deep lake, created by the impoundment of the Snake River, is renowned for its exceptional fishing, drawing anglers in pursuit of walleye, crappie, muskellunge, and white bass, with the Snake River arm also harboring lunker catfish. Boating is a popular activity, with multiple public boat ramps providing easy access. Notably, water skiing and similar activities are not permitted in certain areas to ensure safety. Hunting is permitted in season after Labor Day, with sharp-tailed grouse, prairie grouse, deer, and wild turkey being common game. The adjacent Valentine National Wildlife Refuge provides further opportunities for wildlife viewing and fishing.
