Moose Lake is a pristine 1,301-acre wilderness lake located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota's Lake County, featuring crystal-clear water reaching a maximum depth of 40 feet and approximately 10 miles of entirely undeveloped rocky shoreline surrounded by towering pine, spruce, and birch forests. As BWCA Entry Point 25 located just a few miles northeast of Ely, Moose Lake serves as one of the most popular gateways into the million-acre wilderness, offering paddlers five designated campsites with fire grates and bear-resistant food lockers spread across the lake's scenic bays and islands, plus connections to Newfound Lake and Sucker Lake creating opportunities for multi-day paddling adventures. This exceptional coldwater and warmwater fishery supports naturally reproducing populations of Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, and abundant panfish including Bluegill and Yellow Perch thriving in pristine waters where motorboats are prohibited and fishing pressure remains minimal. The lake's irregular shape with multiple bays, rocky points, and islands creates diverse fish-holding structure and sheltered paddling routes, while the surrounding Superior National Forest provides habitat for moose, black bears, timber wolves, bald eagles, common loons whose haunting calls echo across the water, and over 200 bird species. With portage trails connecting to the vast BWCA network of over 1,200 lakes and 1,200 miles of canoe routes, Moose Lake is perfect for wilderness canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, photography, and backcountry camping where visitors experience true solitude under star-filled northern skies far from roads, motors, and modern development
Located approximately 10-12 miles northeast of Ely, known as the "Canoe Capital of the World" and the premier gateway community to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Moose Lake sits within the million-acre federally protected wilderness that became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System through the Wilderness Act of 1964 and received enhanced protection through the 1978 BWCA Wilderness Act prohibiting motorized use and logging. Entry Point 25 at Moose Lake provides one of the most accessible routes into this pristine wilderness via the Echo Trail (County Road 116) that winds north from Ely through old-growth forests past dozens of wilderness lakes. Ely features exceptional attractions including the International Wolf Center with live wolf exhibits and educational programs teaching about these magnificent apex predators, the North American Bear Center showcasing resident black bears in naturalistic habitats, the Dorothy Molter Museum celebrating the legendary "Root Beer Lady" who lived alone in the BWCA from 1934 until her death in 1986, and Piragis Northwoods Company Outfitters providing canoe rentals, camping gear, permits, and expert trip planning for over 40 years. Visitors can explore downtown Ely's unique shops, dine at Boathouse Brewpub and Restaurant, tour the Soudan Underground Mine State Park where visitors descend 2,341 feet below ground into Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron mine, paddle nearby Lake Vermilion with its 365 islands and 1,200 miles of shoreline, hike to breathtaking overlooks, and experience world-class northern lights viewing. The surrounding region provides year-round recreation including dogsledding with Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails, ice fishing, snowmobiling, spring wildflower viewing, fall color paddling when maples and birch explode in crimson and gold, plus moose viewing opportunities throughout the wilderness where these magnificent animals browse wetlands and wade through shallow lakes during early morning and evening hours in one of Minnesota's last strongholds for this iconic species
This magnificent handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Moose Lake would create a breathtaking centerpiece in your wilderness cabin, Ely-area home, or office, celebrating your connection to this legendary BWCA Entry Point 25 gateway into over one million acres of federally protected wilderness. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully showcases the lake's expansive 1,301-acre wilderness basin with approximately 10 miles of entirely undeveloped rocky shoreline, the five designated campsites scattered across scenic bays and islands, portage trails connecting to Newfound and Sucker Lakes, and the pristine character of waters where no motors have disturbed the surface since motorized use was banned in 1978. The water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the shallower rocky areas to rich deeper blue at the 40-foot maximum depth, while every bay, island, campsite location marked by fire grates, portage landing, prime fishing structure, and the irregular shoreline carved by ancient glaciers over 10,000 years ago are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This stunning three-dimensional masterpiece beautifully captures the pristine wilderness character, world-class paddling heritage, and ecological significance of this beloved St. Louis County treasure where loons call, wolves howl under northern lights, and visitors experience true solitude in one of America's most protected and pristine wilderness areas accessible from the Canoe Capital of the World
