Crawling Stone Lake is a pristine 1,483-acre natural lake on the renowned Fence Lake Chain in Vilas County, featuring exceptionally clear waters (15-foot visibility) reaching a maximum depth of 87 feet with an average depth of 31 feet and nine miles of scenic shoreline with beautiful sand beaches. The lake's bottom composition of 75 percent sand, 10 percent gravel, 10 percent muck, and 5 percent rock creates exceptional habitat structure with weed beds, drop-offs, islands, and underwater humps that hold trophy fish. This outstanding fishery supports excellent populations of Muskellunge, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, and various panfish species, with special Lac du Flambeau Chain bag limits applied to all ten connected lakes including Fence Lake, Flambeau Lake, Little Sand Lake, and others.
