Description

Painted then fired
Hand painting means the glaze went on by hand before firing, so the face carries brush character rather than an even machine coat. On terracotta the clay underneath adds its own unevenness: glaze gathers in the low spots and thins where the surface rises, and gloss picks both out. Slight variation between pieces is recorded, which in practice means a field that moves gently rather than a wall of identical squares. It is not a tile for anyone who wants every piece to match. Twenty four pieces to a box works out at 6.05 square feet, and ordering a spare box is sensible with a handmade product, since a later replacement will come from a different firing.

Care
Wipe the glaze with an ordinary tile cleaner. Raw clay edges can take a sealer if they remain exposed. Brilliant white unsanded grout is the listed companion.
