Description
A 6x6 glazed terracotta tile recorded as hand painted and finished matte, with a bevelled edge. Colour is listed as multicolour, and variation between pieces is slight. Twenty five pieces fill a box for 6.05 square feet.
Painted rather than printed
Somebody applied the decoration on each of these by hand, which is the reason no two come out the same even where the record calls the variation slight. Matte helps: with no reflection fighting it, brushwork stays legible across a whole wall. Around the perimeter a bevel drops away, throwing a shadow into every joint. Bodies measure 3/8 inch. Firing leaves small differences in shape as well as in colour, so a tightly set run shows a little movement along its lines.

Wet walls in a shower is where the record places it, kitchen the room named. Twenty five pieces to each box and 6.05 square feet across them, so a dozen boxes answer 60 square feet once offcuts are allowed. Painted work really does want laying out before anything is fixed: which piece lands where is half the result. Clay cuts more kindly at a slower speed, and a single order keeps two firings off one wall.

Care
Clean with a household tile cleaner and a soft cloth. Abrasive pads will wear a matte glaze faster than a gloss, and on painted work that wear shows sooner.
